- Screech (Main Call):
This call is characterized by a long, harsh, and drawn-out screech or shriek, often described as a rasping hiss or “shreee.” Lasting approximately 1–2 seconds, it is most commonly emitted by male Barn Owls during flight or when attempting to attract a mate. This distinctive and eerie sound is frequently heard during nighttime hours. - Hissing/Begging Call (Juveniles):
Nestlings and fledglings produce a repetitive, high-pitched sound that resembles a “snore” or rasping hiss, particularly during the night as they plead for food. This call is a rhythmic, drawn-out “sssshhhhh” or “sshhh-eek,” frequently repeated. - Clicking Sounds:
Both adult and young Barn Owls can produce bill-clicking noises, which serve as a threat or defensive warning to potential intruders.
