Sphyrnidae
Hammerhead sharks belong to the family Sphyrnidae, characterized by their distinctive T-shaped heads, called cephalofoils. These structures enhance sensory reception, maneuvering, and prey manipulation, offering superior binocular vision and depth perception. Most hammerhead species are classified in the genus Sphyrna, while the winghead shark is in its own genus, Eusphyra. Found worldwide in warmer coastal waters and continental shelves, some hammerhead species form large schools during the day and become solitary hunters at night.
