Remizidae

Penduline tits are small passerine birds belonging to the family Remizidae, closely related to true tits. They typically measure between 7.5 and 11 cm in length and have fine, needle-like bills. Their plumage generally features pale grays, yellows, and white, with some species exhibiting bright colors.

These birds inhabit Eurasia, Africa, and North America, with the genus Remiz primarily found in the Palearctic from Portugal to Siberia and Japan, while the genus Anthoscopus is located in sub-Saharan Africa. Migration varies among species; for instance, the Eurasian penduline tit migrates in winter, while the verdin from arid regions is sedentary.

Penduline tits thrive in diverse habitats with trees or bushes. Their diet mainly consists of insects, although they also consume nectar, seeds, and fruits. They exhibit active foraging behavior similar to true tits, often foraging upside-down and using their feet to manipulate branches.

Notably, most species build intricate pear-shaped nests from spiderwebs, wool, and soft plant materials, suspended from tree branches. The African genus Anthoscopus creates even more complex nests with hidden entrances.
