Wetlands are unique semi-aquatic ecosystems where the ground is either permanently or seasonally flooded. This flooding creates oxygen-poor (anoxic) conditions in the soil. Serving as a transition between water bodies and dry land, wetlands are distinct from other ecosystems due to their vegetation, which is adapted to waterlogged, nutrient-poor soils. They are highly diverse habitats for many aquatic and semi-aquatic plants and animals and help improve water quality by removing excess nutrients like nitrates and phosphorus.
