Trichomonas

Trichomonas is a genus of anaerobic parasites that infect vertebrates. Discovered by Alfred François Donné in 1836 in the pus of a patient with vaginitis, the name reflects its morphological traits. The prefix “tricho-” derives from the Ancient Greek θρίξ (thrix), meaning “hair,” describing Trichomonas’s flagella, while the suffix “-monas” indicates its resemblance to unicellular organisms in the genus Monas.
