The British Ornithologists’ Union

The British Ornithologists’ Union (BOU) promotes the global study of birds (ornithology) to enhance understanding and support conservation. Founded in 1858 by Professor Alfred Newton, Henry Baker Tristram, and others, the BOU has been publishing its quarterly journal, “Ibis,” since 1859.

The BOU Records Committee (BOURC) manages the British List, the official record of bird species in Great Britain. The BOU is based in Peterborough and is a registered charity in England, Wales, and Scotland.
