The Sperm Whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is the largest toothed whale, with males reaching lengths of 15–18 meters and weighing 45–70 metric tons.
Sperm Whales have robust bodies, paddle-shaped flippers, and asymmetrical nasal bones with the blowhole positioned on the left side of the head. They have visible teeth. Their eyes cannot swivel, meaning they have to rely more on echolocation than they do on vision.
A notable feature is spermaceti, a waxy substance in the Sperm Whale’s head that aids in echolocation. All species dive deep for food, primarily squid, fish, and sharks. Gestation lasts 9 to 15 months, with calves staying with their mothers for at least two years, and they form pods usually made up of females and young.
