Smooth Hammerhead

The smooth hammerhead (Sphyrna zygaena) is a species of hammerhead shark known for its unique flattened, laterally extended head shape, which is smooth without an indentation. Preferring temperate waters, it is found worldwide at medium latitudes and migrates toward the poles in summer, occasionally forming large schools.

As the second-largest hammerhead shark, it can reach up to 5 m in length and feeds on a variety of bony fishes and invertebrates, with larger individuals also preying on sharks and rays. The smooth hammerhead is viviparous, giving birth to 20–40 pups per litter. While relatively common, it is often caught by commercial fisheries for its fins.
