
Slovenia, officially the Republic of Slovenia, is located in Central Europe, bordered by Italy, Austria, Hungary, and Croatia, with a short coastline along the Adriatic Sea. The country covers 20,271 square kilometers and has a population of approximately 2.1 million. The official language is Slovene, and it has a predominantly temperate continental climate. The capital and largest city is Ljubljana, with other major urban centers including Maribor, Kranj, Celje, and Koper.
Historically, Slovenia has been part of various empires, including the Roman and Holy Roman Empires, and merged into the Kingdom of Yugoslavia after World War I. Occupied by Germany, Italy, and Hungary during World War II, Slovenia became part of Yugoslavia again in 1945. It declared independence in June 1991.
Today, Slovenia is a developed country with a high-income economy, combining traditional industries like manufacturing and agriculture with modern sectors such as IT and finance. It is a member of the European Union, NATO, and several international organizations.
