Skates are cartilaginous fish in the family Rajidae, part of the superorder Batoidea. There are over 150 species across 17 genera. Softnose skates and pygmy skates were formerly considered subfamilies but are now recognized as distinct families. The term “skate” can also refer to the entire order Rajiformes, which includes families like Anacanthobatidae and Arhynchobatidae.
