This bird is a charismatic resident of northern coniferous forests, especially those rich in lichen. It has a dusky-brown and gray body with cinnamon highlights on its tail and wings. Generally quiet, it feeds on seeds, berries, carrion, and small insects, including the eggs and young of small birds. Often, it will accept food from humans and can be quite tame.
