Scotland (Scots: Scotland; Scottish Gaelic: Alba) is part of the United Kingdom, covering nearly one-third of its land area. It occupies the northern part of Great Britain and over 790 islands, mainly in the Hebrides and Northern Isles. Scotland shares a 96-mile (154 km) land border with England to the southeast and is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the North Sea, and the Irish Sea. In 2022, its population was 5,439,842. The capital is Edinburgh, and the largest city is Glasgow.
