Scoophead

The scoophead (Sphyrna media) is a lesser-known species of hammerhead shark in the Sphyrnidae family, found in tropical waters from Panama to southern Brazil and the eastern Pacific from the Gulf of California to Ecuador. This species has a moderately broad, mallet-shaped head, an arched forward margin, and lacks prenarial grooves. Its coloration is grey-brown above and light below, without fin markings.

It feeds on small elasmobranchs, octopus, squid, and flounders. Viviparous in nature, pups are born measuring 34 cm or less. The scoophead is caught commercially through various fishing methods, including as bycatch in gillnet mackerel fisheries off Trinidad.
