Scalloped hammerhead

The scalloped hammerhead (Sphyrna lewini) is a species of hammerhead shark in the family Sphyrnidae. Originally named Zygaena lewini, its name derives from the Greek word “sphyrna,” meaning “hammer,” which refers to the shark’s distinctive head shape. Unlike other hammerheads, it has a central indentation on the front of its head, along with two additional indentations, giving it a “scalloped” appearance.

With a high metabolic rate, these sharks require ample food, which influences their behavior and habitat, often using coastal areas as breeding grounds.
