Salmonella is a genus of rod-shaped, gram-negative bacteria in the Enterobacteriaceae family. It includes two species: Salmonella enterica and Salmonella bongori. S. enterica, the type species, has six subspecies with over 2,650 serotypes. The genus is named after American veterinary surgeon Daniel Elmer Salmon (1850–1914).
