The Pennines, also known as the Pennine Chain or Pennine Hills, are a range of uplands in Northern England, often called the “backbone of England.” They extend from Derbyshire and Staffordshire in the Midlands to Northumberland in the North East, starting at the Tyne Gap and passing through regions such as the North Pennines, Yorkshire Dales, South Pennines, and Peak District, before reaching the River Trent. Some definitions also include the Border Moors and Cheviot Hills beyond the Tyne Gap.
