Marsh Tit

The Marsh Tit, scientific name Poecile palustris, is a small Eurasian passerine bird belonging to the tit family, Paridae. Marsh Tits measure about 12 cm (4.7 inches) long and weigh 12 g (0.42 oz), it features a black crown, pale cheeks, a brown back, and greyish-brown wings and tail.

Identifying marsh tits can be challenging due to their similarity to willow tits, especially in the UK, where the two were only recognized as separate species in 1897. Although classified as “Least Concern,” their populations have declined significantly—over 50% in the UK since the 1970s.

They can be found across Eurasia. Marsh Tits are omnivores; feeding on caterpillars, spiders, and seeds. They prefer nesting in tree holes, enlarging existing hollows to meet their requirements, with clutches typically consisting of 5 to 9 eggs.
