Magpies are birds in the family Corvidae, known for their intelligence. The Eurasian magpie is considered one of the most intelligent non-mammalian species, capable of recognizing itself in a mirror test. They can make and use tools, imitate human speech, grieve, play games, and work in teams. While magpies in the genus Pica are found in temperate regions of Europe, Asia, and western North America, those in the genus Cyanopica are located in East Asia and the Iberian Peninsula. Notably, the magpies in Australia are unrelated to those found elsewhere in the world.
