Heather is the primary plant in heathland and moorland ecosystems, as well as in some bog and acidic woodland areas. Calluna vulgaris, or common heather, is the sole species in the genus Calluna, belonging to the Ericaceae family. This low-growing evergreen shrub typically reaches 20 to 50 centimeters (8 to 20 inches) in height, occasionally up to 1 meter (40 inches). It thrives in acidic soils across Europe and Asia Minor in sunny or moderately shaded areas.
