Eurasian Blue Tit

The Eurasian Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus) is a small passerine bird in the tit family, Paridae. They are easily recognized by their blue and yellow plumage.

These non-migratory birds are common residents in temperate and subarctic Europe and the western Palearctic, thriving in deciduous or mixed woodlands, particularly those with oak. Blue tits prefer to nest in tree holes, but they take well to using nest boxes. They compete for nesting sites and food with the larger great tit.

Their diet mainly consists of insects and spiders, but they also eat seeds and plants outside the breeding season. Eurasian Blue Tits are known for their acrobatic skills, blue tits can hang upside down and cling to slender branches while foraging.

In winter, they often form mixed flocks with great tits and typically roost in ivy or evergreens, though they seek small holes for shelter in harsh weather. A popular sight in European gardens, blue tits display lively feeding behaviors, often swinging beneath feeders and calling out “tee, tee, tee” or a scolding “churr.”
