The definition of East Anglia can vary. The Anglo-Saxon Kingdom of East Anglia, established in the 6th century, originally encompassed the modern counties of Norfolk and Suffolk, extending westward into parts of Cambridgeshire, especially the northern regions known as The Fens. Today, East Anglia includes Norfolk, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire, which also comprises the unitary authority of the City of Peterborough. Since 1976, these three counties have formed the Roman Catholic Diocese of East Anglia, and they were considered in a proposed government devolution package in 2016.
