Cumbria is a ceremonial county in North West England, bordering Scotland to the north and the Irish Sea to the west. With an area of 6,769 square kilometers (2,614 square miles) and a population of about 500,012, it is the third-largest ceremonial county by area but the eighth-smallest by population. The largest settlement is Carlisle (74,281), followed by Barrow-in-Furness (56,745), Kendal (29,593), and Whitehaven (23,986). Cumbria was created in 1974 from parts of the historic counties of Cumberland, Westmorland, Lancashire, and Yorkshire, and is divided into two unitary authority areas: Westmorland and Furness, and Cumberland.
