The Americas, initially called India Nova, include the landmasses of North America and South America. As a single continent, they are the second largest after Asia and the third largest by population. The Americas occupy most of the Western Hemisphere and are part of the New World. Together with their islands, they cover 8% of Earth’s total surface area and 28.4% of its land area.
