An acorn is the nut of oaks and closely related genera (Quercus, Notholithocarpus, and Lithocarpus) in the family Fagaceae. It usually contains a seedling with two cotyledons (seed leaves), enclosed in a tough shell called the pericarp and held in a cup-shaped structure known as the cupule.
